Michael Pollan, describes the preparation of a meal as an “arc of transformation” whereby “Every dish contains not just culinary ingredients but also the ingredients of narrative: a beginning, a middle, and an end.” The beginning and the middle are just as much fun for me as the end result – I enjoy planning and preparing a meal such as the July 4th fest coming soon. But what I often forget is that we must eat on the days leading up to the holiday as well. I thought it might be fun to write about the things I’m preparing on the days preceding the big event.
I have some bell peppers in the fridge that must be used soon, and I like to buy and freeze a quantity of flank steak to have on hand. Just what I need to make Beef Stir-Fry with Bell Peppers and Black Pepper Sauce. This is a one-dish meal that is nutritious, delicious, and hugely popular in this household. While there is about a half-hour’s prep work, everything comes together very quickly at the end, and you are rewarded with sweet bell peppers and tender beef, with a gingery, black-peppery sauce. We like to serve the dish over brown basmati or jasmine rice.
Truth be told, I am not actually serving a full-on dinner on the 4th – we are joining friends for grilled chicken and fixins. I am making a strawberry & rhubarb pie and ice cream. But that’s a post for another day
