While planning a visit with an out-of-town friend I looked for a gift that would be unique to Portland. True, hazelnut butter, salmon, and Pendleton wool say “Oregon”, but I wanted something that would be hard to find anywhere else. I decided that chocolate would be a good choice. I am crazy about Moonstruck Chocolate – I’ve visited their factory in North Portland and never miss a chance to stop at their store on NW 23rd. But the best chocolate I know of is the silky smooth, decadent creations from Alma Chocolates on NE 28th Ave. I bought a little assortment for my friend and gave it to her while in Iowa this past weekend.
Yesterday I got an email from her praising the lavender-infused, chocolate caramel, and sending along a link from the hip website, Mouth, featuring an article about none other than Portland’s Alma Chocolate. I was not familiar with Mouth so I’ve enjoyed perusing their offerings and here’s what I’ve found: if you are looking for a perfect gift for that hard to shop for person in your life, Mouth is the place to go.
It’s true that mass-produced chocolates are a bit of a cliché on Valentine’s Day. But a few delicacies from Alma are a whole other thing. I know I would love a salted caramel or two.
