I prepared a tasty leg of lamb for Easter dinner. Everyone enjoyed it. But had it not been for Cousin Ann’s yummy hors d’oeuvres my poor guests would have headed down the street to Taco Bell because dinner was an hour late. Why? The lamb took almost twice as long to roast as the recipe suggested. This was after I followed the instructions to the letter and made sure that the oven was thoroughly pre-heated. I have always battled with my oven – it has always cooked irregularly. A thermometer showed that the oven was sometimes as much as 25° under what the control indicated – but not always. It was designed as a convection oven but I opted to get the cheaper, non-convection version. That may have been my downfall, the cooking just wasn’t consistent. After that embarrassing incident I decided that my 10-year old range needed to be retired.
Enter a new General Electric Profile gas range. Five burners, two ovens, and a griddle insert all nicely fitting into the standard 30″ opening in the counter. It’s an all gas appliance – some models feature a gas cook top, and electric ovens. I am told that electric ovens work very well, especially when using the broiler or the self-cleaning functions, but they are more expensive. I did a lot of research on Consumer Reports’ website as well as at Costco, Amazon, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. Costco carries some sensational ranges by LG, GE, and Samsung but I went with Amazon because the GE was substantially cheaper there, and because I am a Prime member, shipping was free. I also purchased Amazon’s install and old range haul away package and was very pleased with the service. So my old range gets recycled and I have a spiffy new appliance that baked a beautiful Chicken with Herbs, Garlic & Shallots to perfection.
I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to order an appliance online and contract with a local installer to get it installed. I remember my parents and grandparents having the same cooking ranges forever but I am told that the new appliances do not last as long. Other than the cranky oven, my 10-year old range worked perfectly well but I am looking forward to using this new generation of appliances.
