Delicious and nutritious they may be, but avocados are notoriously difficult to decide when they are in their prime. I like to buy two or three at at time so that the chances of finding at least one good one are assured. Avocados do not like the rough treatment they often receive in the stores and, like bananas, can have a nasty bruise inside without any external signs. I try to pick out avocados from the back of the bin and under the top layer (the top layer are often bruised by careless produce clerks who I’ve seen THROW the fruits back onto the stack). Despite the funny graphic’s implication, there is a use for the “Too late” ones – guacamole! If you were to drop the avocado and it goes “splat!”, it’s ready for guacamole.
