I’ve been going through a stack of cooking magazines that had outgrown my storage capacity, looking for interesting dishes that help widen my culinary repertoire. I have two or three different methods for brining a turkey – I really don’t need any more. But eggplant with bacon miso – now there’s a new one. Having gleaned the good stuff from the three magazines that I subscribe to: Fine Cooking, Cook’s Illustrated, Bon Appétit, I regretfully sent about three years worth of paper to the recycle bin. I am left with 14 recipes that I want to test before I decide to paste them into my looseleaf “keeper” binder. And here they are in no particular order, with links to the appropriate publisher:
Updates are in italics below.
Pappardelle with Pork Sugo and Hazelnuts – Link to recipe – I tried this one the other night and it is sensational.
Cranberry Margarita – Link to recipe – I’m not a drinker but I like to offer guests a special cocktail along with the wines. This packs a punch but they loved this one.
Peanut Butter Bones – Link to recipe – Our dogs received these as a present from a neighbor. They L O V E D them!
Eggplant with Bacon Miso – Link to recipe – Who doesn’t like bacon on anything? Delicious!
Olive Oil Pumpkin Bread – Link to recipe – Ellie Krieger’s healthy take on an old favorite. Healthy and a nice take on the sometimes too sweet pumpkin bread.
Pan-Roasted Rosemary Chicken – Link to recipe – This just sounds yummy and simple. A good weekday dish. This was quick and sensational.
Buttermilk Panna Cotta with Apricot and Candied Fennel – Link to recipe – We love panna cotta. And candied fennel seeds? Gotta try this. Wow! Really, really good.
Potato Salad with 7-Minute Eggs and Mustard Vinaigrette – Link to recipe – I am fond of potato salads – this one uses still-soft egg yolks to help dress the salad. Very good!
The Ultimate Bolognese Sauce – Link to Recipe – Loved it in restaurants, never made it. It’s quite rich, don’t pour too much on your pasta.
Beef Bourguignonne Pot Pie – Link to recipe – A bit of a project, but with beef chuck, bacon, leeks, carrots, mushrooms wrapped in pastry, how can it miss? Beyond fabulous!
Boilermaker Tailgate Chili – Link to recipe – I’m a Hawkeye fan but Purdue may be onto something here. This is some damn good chili.
Brandied Ginger Cocktail – Link to recipe – Sounds delicious if only I can find a nice ripe peach. Good, even with a not-so-ripe peach.
No-Knead Brioche – Link to recipe – Seems whenever a recipe calls for brioche I can’t find it at the store. This is wonderful! Wait until you make French Toast!
Caramelized Onion and Shallot Dip – Link to recipe – I’m making this on New Year’s Day for sure. Good, but I would cut back on the onion. Makes a big batch – good for parties.
Am I 14 and done? Not on your life. As shown below, there’s a stack of clippings that Mead and I have accumulated dating from the late 1980s onward. It’s a labor of love.
